Small words, big numbers.
Small words drive big results. After running 500+ microcopy A/B tests, we've found that changing 5–10 words can lift conversion 20-35%. This playbook contains the exact phrases, patterns, and principles that consistently win across forms, checkouts, and CTAs.
median conversion lift among statistically-significant microcopy wins.
biggest single lift: replacing 'Sign Up' with 'Start your free 14-day trial' on a SaaS landing page.
of microcopy tests produced a statistically-significant winner. Most tests are noise. Plan for it.
The patterns that win.
| Pattern | Median Lift | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Specificity over generic | +18% | 'Get your free trial' → 'Start your free 14-day trial' |
| Outcome over action | +15% | 'Submit' → 'Get my proposal' |
| First-person ownership | +12% | 'Your account' → 'My account' |
| Time signal | +10% | 'Sign up' → 'Sign up — takes 60 seconds' |
| Social proof in CTA | +9% | 'Try free' → 'Try free — 12k+ teams use this' |
| Risk-removal | +8% | 'Buy now' → 'Try risk-free for 30 days' |
A repeatable audit.
Map the path
List every word a user reads from landing to converted. Headers, body, button labels, error messages, confirmation screens.
Score each surface
Tag each piece of copy with one of: outcome, action, instruction, status. Outcomes outperform actions; instructions outperform status.
Identify the friction triggers
Forms, payments, sign-up walls, error pages. The top 5 friction surfaces produce 80% of the lift potential.
Pick three to test
Don't test everything at once — you'll never find the cause. Test the three with the most pageviews first.
Run a 14-day test
Most microcopy effects materialize within two weeks. If you need 90 days, the effect is too small to ship.
Document the winner — and the loser
Build the institutional library. Patterns repeat across surfaces; track them.
Patterns that win, patterns that don't.
✓DO
- Use specific numbers and time horizons
- Frame CTAs as outcomes, not actions
- Use first-person ('My', 'I get') in account contexts
- Show how long something takes
- Reduce risk explicitly ('No credit card', 'Cancel anytime')
✗DON'T
- Use 'Submit' as a button label, ever
- Lead with 'Welcome' on a logged-in page
- Apologize in error messages ('Oops!')
- Use exclamation marks in CTAs
- Bury social proof in a separate section when it could power the CTA
A starter library.

- Path mapped from landing → converted
- Each surface tagged (outcome/action/instruction/status)
- Top 5 friction surfaces identified
- Three high-value tests scoped
- 14-day test runtime committed
- Winner doc shared with the team
- Loser doc shared (so we don't re-test)
- Pattern library updated with the result
